I am a big fan of feel-good movies. But the reason I love them is because of how unrealistic they are. They help me keep hope alive and have faith that things do get better. They are what I turn to when I need a break from the real world.
These stories have one thing in common, they show happiness as the default state of a person. As if every other emotion is temporary and that if somehow I manage to work through all those emotions we can go back to being happy. But that’s not it. You need to seek happiness as actively as you try to run away from sadness. And no, this isn’t as bad as it seems. Cause now you know that you have the power. The power to choose happiness. Sometimes you may need to work a bit harder to find it but trust me it is always there lurking behind in some corner.
And all the other emotions you feel are valid too. They don’t make you any less you. They don’t take away from your awesomeness. It’s human to feel. So feel it and find it in you to move past it. Don’t hold onto emotions for very long though. They are meant to be fleeting.
Another thing these movies get wrong is the concept of soul searching. No, it isn’t one person or one incident that decides your fate forever. You will keep changing and growing. You will hate something, then suddenly fall in love with it and then one fine day you will decide that you are sick of it. It is okay. It is normal. You are allowed to. But always try to step beyond your comfort zone and say yes to new experiences. You will gain something, a story if nothing else.
So what I am trying to say is that movies are nice but they don’t always reflect how life works. I would love it if it was, but that is just not how it works. So do things that make you happy at this moment. Do small things that make you happy like binging on a midnight snack with your sibling or an afternoon adventure with your bestie. These are the moments that you will look back upon. And be proud of yourself for being able to find these little moments of happiness that were within your reach, waiting for you.
Lots of love,
Joy.
