The subtle art of Gifting

Gifts, notes, letters, flowers, chocolates. Arent these the best things ever? Everyone loves loves loves to get gifts -to be shown that someone cares for you and thinks about you.

To me, I prefer to give gifts. I enjoy the time I take to plan it, to make sure it's the perfect gift for that person for that year, to make sure its significant. Then, the process of making it. I'm not very artistic or creative so I usually take the help of my sister and she draws most of the things for me while pinterest helps me with cool ideas. Then ofcourse you to need to include the slight teasing - an instagram story hiding the gift, a very ominous call - the smile on my face when I do this will make you think I'm an evil villain. And lastly, the actual giving of the gift - hands down the (second) best past. The smiles on their faces, the appreciation (a little too much sometimes) makes all the few months of hardwork totally worth it.

Same way for surprise parties. I love planning surprises more than anything. I start months in advance of any birthday to even think of an idea. My friends tease me by saying that I am too prepared but in reality I'm just too excited.

I honestly dont know why I love it so much. Maybe it's because its a chance for me to show the people I love that I really do love them. Maybe its the fun of making something that I know will make someone else smile and be happy. Maybe it's that its another memory added to our friendship. But to me it is a pretty intimate thing and it's why birthdays are my favorite.

In lockdown, a friend of mine sent me pictures of some gifts I had given him about 4 years ago. He then proceeded to thank me for it again and tell me he still loves it. The happiness I felt was quite unexplainable. The fact that he kept it safely, remembered it and cherishes it. The idea itself motivates me to make better gifts every year.

Now you may call me crazy but, my amazing friends do so much for me. More than I could have asked for and more than I can even imagine. They are patient with me, support me and most importantly deal with my shit. This is literally the only way I get to show them they are important to me and I love them.

Even if it's a heartfelt letter to them on new years, even if it's one small rose and a bar of chocolate on friendship day, it always takes my friends by surprise and makes them smile their cute smiles (the way I'm a sucker for all their smiles).

See you soon,

Jordyn!
